The truth is, in my opinion, that most people have a New Years resolution of some sort. Some will say they don’t, but in my experience, that only means that they don’t have a public one.
In addition, over 66% of resolutions involve weight loss, healthy eating or exercise….and only 8% succeed! That’s crazy.
When I heard that, I thought I would spend my Founder Friday blog putting together a list of the top secrets of those that KEEP their resolutions. So here we go:
Secret #1: A BIGGER REASON
People who keep their resolutions dig really deep on their motivation. It’s not “I resolve to eat healthier”….it’s “I resolve to eat healthier BECAUSE…..”. There is a big difference there. Who wants to eat healthy for no reason? No one. There is a REASON that you want to eat healthy. There is a result that you are looking for. Dig as deep as you can on this until you find the REAL and MEANINGFUL reason. The one that gets you out of bed at 5am to go on the run or makes you skip the donuts at work for the healthy leftovers you brought. Don’t make resolutions about things you can’t find a deep reason for or you will lose interest. There must be something strong driving you to make this resolution and you must define it.
Secret #2: KEEP THE REASON VISIBLE
Take that reason that you discovered and defined and put it where you can see it often. Define it by a picture and make it your desktop picture, write it on sticky notes and put them in the fridge, write it on the bathroom mirror. Put it EVERYWHERE so it’s on your mind.
Secret #3: ACCOUNTABILITY
You have to make sure others will hold you accountable. Don’t keep your resolution secret. Tell everyone you can and ask them to hold you accountable. It is much harder to go out to eat for lunch at work and get the fries when everyone knows about your resolution. Make it as public as possible and ASK for the accountability. Give them permission to hold you accountable.
Secret #4: INSPIRE OTHERS TO JOIN
Open your resolution up to others. Don’t just ask for accountability, invite them to go WITH you. Make it clear that you would enjoy company along the way and inspire others to join your new commitment. One piece is having accountability, but the other is having partners in the same journey. This is why the 90/10 Community is so effective. It provides accountability for sure, but more than anything else it provides PARTNERSHIP.
Secret #5: TRACK EVERYTHING
Successful resolutioners (is that a word?) track everything. They take before pics, they track their exercise, track their food, and anything else related to their resolution. They are serious about planning. Planning their meals, only cheating on specified days, etc.
You have the ability to write your 2016 story any way you want. Those are just some tips to make sure the story comes out the way you want it to end.
Do you have a resolution for 2016? Share it with us on our FB page or in the 90/10 Community if you are a member. If you aren’t a member and want that accountability and partnership, START HERE.
