Let’s talk about pizza…and specifically about Healthy Pizza Recipes!
Pizza Origins
It is perhaps commonly, perhaps not, known that the pizza pie originated in Chicago, not in Italy. That is an unexpected fact that kind of makes me go “Yay, America! Nailed it.” The original pizza pie from Italy with layers of pizza-y goodness may have been the inspiration (Yes I just did put Chicago and Inspiration in the same paragraph. You’re welcome for the earworm.) but the pizza that we think of when we think pizza actually came from Chicago.
Is Pizza Healthy?
It is, of course, hard to go wrong with a bread (if you like deep dish or hand tossed) or cracker (if you like thin crust) topped with a rich red sauce that bursts with flavor and a ton of cheese. Any other toppings you might stick on it from there are just bonus, really, but what a bonus! “Um, you had me at … all of those.”
Unfortunately, over the decades, pizza has gotten itself into a little bit of trouble with those who think something that has a lot of calories can’t be healthy. It has stood its own ground, though, and managed to work its way into the hearts (and mouths) of not just Chicagoans, not just Americans, but into the whole, wide world….theoretically. Americans alone buy 3 billion pizzas every single year.
Sadly, most of those pizzas are falling short of whole grains and weighing in too heavy on artificial (red tier) ingredients. Pizza CAN be healthy but most of the commercially available pizzas that are out there aren’t really that great for you. We at 90/10 Nutrition aim to change at least the stigma of “pizza = junk food” by providing, at the time of this writing, 27 recipes that turn junky pizza into healthy pizza. Healthy pizza recipes for everyone!
Pizza In Many Forms
Pizza doesn’t have to be the steaming round disc that comes to your house in a cardboard box. And pizza doesn’t have to be the cheese-topped cardboard rectangle of your elementary school’s cafeteria. Pizza, to be honest, doesn’t even have to really be pizza. Sure, we have your standard healthy pizza recipes, like THIS ONE, but we have a fantastic Pizza Grilled Cheese that really must be tried! Plus, we have Vegan Thai Pizza, Farmer’s Market Ranch Pizza, Pizza Pot Pie, Pizza Quiche, Pizza spaghetti squash boats, and more!
Why Make Pizza At Home?
I know what you’re thinking. You’re going to say that you don’t have time nor inclination to make your own crust from scratch. You’re going to say you’re not sure what the point of healthy pizza recipes really is anyway. You’re not a chef, and the whole point of pizza is not having to cook.
And I am going to say that you are both right and wrong.
Let me explain:
You are right. If you don’t have time or inclination to make your own crust, then don’t make it. Use a whole grain English Muffin or a whole grain bagel, or even a whole grain tortilla. But you’re wrong if the whole point of pizza is not having to cook. Let’s admit that the whole point of pizza is eating pizza. Because, pizza. And if you’re gonna eat pizza, shouldn’t it be good pizza? Shouldn’t it be Pizza Pot Pie? Shouldn’t it be Deep Dish Pizza? Shouldn’t it be Stuffed Pizza Pie?
